Ooty, officially known as Udhagamandalam and also referred to as Ootacamund, is a picturesque town located in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, India. It's affectionately known as the "Queen of Hill Stations" and is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and mild climate, making it a beloved tourist destination. The town sits at an elevation of 2,240 meters (7,350 feet) above sea level and is nestled in the Nilgiri Hills, part of the Western Ghats.
Historically, Ooty was occupied by the Toda people before coming under the rule of the East India Company in the 18th century. It served as the summer capital of the Madras Presidency. The local economy is primarily driven by the tourism and agriculture sectors, with the town being well-connected to the plains by the Nilgiri ghat roads and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The name Ooty is derived from "Ottakal Mandu," with "Otha-Cal" meaning "single stone" in Tamil, a reference to a sacred stone revered by the local Toda people, and "Mandu" being a Toda word for "village." This name evolved into Udhagamandalam, which was anglicised to Ootacamund by the British, and later shortened to Ooty.
Ooty's climate is classified as subtropical highland, with temperatures generally cooler than the surrounding plains. The town experiences heavy rainfall during both the South-West and North-East monsoons, with an average annual precipitation of about 1,100 millimeters (43 inches).
The region is rich in biodiversity and is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, the largest protected forest area in India. It's home to a variety of flora and fauna, including endangered species like the Nilgiri langur and the Bengal tiger. Ooty's landscapes are dotted with tea plantations, and Nilgiri tea, a unique black tea variety, is cultivated here.
Ooty's attractions include the Ooty Lake, Botanical Gardens, Doddabetta Peak (the highest in the Nilgiris), and the historic Nilgiri Mountain Railway. The town also hosts a range of cultural and natural sites, making it a comprehensive destination for visitors seeking both relaxation and adventure.
