Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram, is a historic town in the Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu, India. It's renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage Site, which includes a group of monuments dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries. These monuments were built during the Pallava Dynasty and include remarkable examples of rock-cut and structural temples. The town was named after the Pallava king Narasimhavarman I, who was also known as Mamalla, meaning "great wrestler."

The site is famous for its architectural marvels, such as the Shore Temple, which is dedicated to Shiva, and the Pancha Rathas (Five Chariots), monolithic structures named after the Pandavas and Draupadi from the epic Mahabharata. Another significant attraction is the Descent of the Ganges or Arjuna's Penance, one of the largest open-air rock reliefs in the world, showcasing intricate carvings of Hindu mythology.

Mahabalipuram was a significant seaport during the Pallava kingdom, engaging in trade with distant lands, including Southeast Asia. The town's strategic location on the Coromandel Coast, along with its rich cultural and historical heritage, makes it a popular tourist destination. The contemporary town plan was established by the British Raj in 1827, and today, it is part of the Chennai Metropolitan Area, serving as a satellite town of Chennai.

The climate of Mahabalipuram is tropical, with a notable variation in rainfall between the dry and wet seasons. The town's landmarks, including its temples and rock reliefs, not only attract tourists but also reflect the artistic and religious traditions of its time, making Mahabalipuram a key site for understanding India's rich cultural history.
