Jodhpur, located in the Indian state of Rajasthan, is the second-largest city in the state and serves as the administrative headquarters for both the Jodhpur district and division. Founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, a Rajput chief of the Rathore clan, Jodhpur was historically the capital of the Kingdom of Marwar, now part of Rajasthan. The city is a popular tourist destination, known for its many palaces, forts, and temples set against the stark backdrop of the Thar Desert. It's famously referred to as the "Blue City" due to the blue-painted houses around the Mehrangarh Fort.

Jodhpur's old city encircles the Mehrangarh Fort, bounded by a wall with several gates, but has expanded significantly beyond these walls over the decades. It's strategically located near the geographic center of Rajasthan, making it a convenient base for travel within this tourist-frequented region. The city was featured in The New York Times's "52 Places to Go in 2020."

The name "Jodhpur" derives from its founder, Rao Jodha, with "Jodh" representing Rao Jodha and "pur" meaning city or town in Sanskrit, translating to "City of Jodha." The city's early history is marked by Jodha's conquests from the Delhi Sultanate, establishing the kingdom of Marwar. Throughout its history, Jodhpur has seen periods of prosperity and strife, including annexation by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1581, making it a Mughal vassal, and later experiencing internal autonomy and cultural flourishing. The city also faced challenges during the British colonial period but emerged as a significant city post-India's independence in 1947, merging into the union of India and later becoming part of the state of Rajasthan.

Jodhpur's economy is diverse, contributing significantly to Rajasthan's economy through various industries, including a major handicraft industry. The city is also a key educational hub, with numerous coaching institutes for competitive exams. It's undergoing further industrial development, notably with the construction of a refinery in Pachpadra and its strategic location influencing the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Project.

Culturally, Jodhpur is known for its distinct food, including Mirchi Bada, Rabdi Ghewar, and Mawa Kachori. Tourism plays a vital role in the city's economy, with attractions like Mehrangarh Fort, Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jaswant Thada, and the Clock Tower drawing visitors from around the world. The city's historic and scenic beauty has also made it a popular location for film shoots, featuring in various movies and advertisements.
