Visible from afar, the fortifications of a medieval city - ramparts and moats, walls, towers and kennels - symbolized its defensibility. The city gates represented a weak point that needed special protection. In the 16th century, Goslar's city fortifications were strengthened for the last time, and the gates were expanded into veritable "gate castles". This situation can still be seen at the "Breite Tor" with its flanking kennels and the gatekeeper barracks "Werderhof". Large parts of the city fortifications were demolished in the 18th/19th century - they had "had their day" and stood in the way of the expansion and modernization of the city.
