Walking tour through the German, fairy-tale, medieval Rothenburg o. d. Tauber from The Klingentor to the Monastery Garden.
The Klingentor.
The Blade Gate has long served peaceful purposes
The Klingentor is distinguished by one special feature: It shares a wall with the church of St. Wolfgang. The fortified and sacral buildings are linked in this unique way.
From inside the church, defenders of the city could climb the gate tower and casemates were built under the church to fire from here at attackers who had already made it to the moat. The tower, which is more than thirty meters high, has served very practical purposes since the 16th century: Here ends the water pipe laid in 1594, from which the city's tube wells are supplied with water. For this purpose, the Klingentor was converted into a water tower with a copper boiler. The Klingentor got its name from the ravine steeply sloping down to the valley, which has been called "Klinge" (blade) by the population since ancient times.
