Riga, the capital city of Latvia, has a long and fascinating history dating back more than 800 years.
The city was founded in 1201 by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword, a Catholic military order, as a trading hub and fortress against pagans in the region.
During the Middle Ages, Riga became a wealthy and powerful city, as a member of the Hanseatic League and a center of the European trade.
In the centuries that followed, Riga was ruled by various powers, including the Swedish, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Russian Empire.
During the Soviet era, Riga became the capital of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic, and saw significant development and urbanization.
Latvia regained its independence in 1991, and Riga once again became the capital of an independent country.
