Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia, has a rich and fascinating history that stretches back over 8,000 years.
The city was first settled by the ancient Finno-Ugric peoples, and later by the Vikings in the 10th century. In the Middle Ages, Tallinn became a major trading hub for the Hanseatic League, a powerful economic alliance of merchant cities in Northern Europe.
During this time, the city's Old Town was built, and many of its iconic buildings and landmarks, such as the Town Hall and the city walls, were constructed.
In the centuries that followed, Tallinn was ruled by various powers, including the Teutonic Order, Sweden, and Russia. It wasn't until 1918 that Estonia gained its independence from Russia, and Tallinn became its capital once again.
Despite being occupied by both the Soviet Union and Germany during World War II, Estonia maintained its independence and regained it officially in 1991, making Tallinn the capital of a newly independent country once again.
Today, Tallinn is a thriving city that beautifully combines its rich history with modern-day innovation and technology.
