🧵 ABOUT THE CITY:
Helsinki, the capital city of Finland, has a history as unique as its name, which literally means "Helsinge's tiny bay" - not so tiny anymore!
The city was founded in 1550 by King Gustav I of Sweden.
Over the centuries, Helsinki has seen its share of wars, fires, and even a plague or two, but it has always managed to rise from the ashes. Sometimes quite literally - the Great Fire of 1808 destroyed most of the city.
Fast forward to the early 20th century, when Finland finally gained its independence from Russia.
Helsinki became the capital of the newly independent nation, and a frenzy of construction and development ensued.
Today, Helsinki is a thriving, modern city with a deep respect for its past. It’s an amazing city, surrounded by breathtaking nature, which you can only see when going up to the North.
Helsinki is also known as the "Daughter of the Baltic" - and that’s how I’m finishing my mini Baltic series!
