Here's the first seven minutes (after commercial break) of an edition of Eyewitness News as aired over Boston, MA's then NBC affiliate, WBZ Channel 4 (now a CBS O&O/affiliate), anchored by Maurice Lewis. This was broadcast immediately after the special NBC: The First Fifty Years, aired under the umbrella The Big Event.

Firemen rush to alarm on Route 128 in Yarmouth where two-story commercial building was ablaze; they were hampered by ammunition inside nearby sporting goods store

Investigators from State Fire Marshal's Office headed to New Bedford to investigate fire that destroyed a Penn Central freight warehouse

Fire following collision on Massachusetts Turnpike Extension claims life of highly decorated State Trooper, Edward Mahoney, 44, whose cruiser was rammed by a trailer truck driven by Glen Wolf (sp?) of Hillsborough, OR; Jack Borden reports, Trooper Richard Whelan reminisces about fallen colleague

Fire and explosion at vat rip American Chicle factory (makers of Dentyne and Chiclets) in Queens, NY; four dozen injured, 38 seriously, one near death; report from NBC News' Chris Wallace (son of 60 Minutes' Mike Wallace, and formerly at WBBM Channel 2), with interview with Queensborough Correctional Facility guard Waldman who was on scene; only 150 worked at time of explosion, whereas on a normal day 800 are on job

Boston Police Commissioner Joseph Jordan invites Mattapan residents to give comments and criticism of department, with topic not only about crime but prevention, as reported by William Zayas Sanjurjo; four area residents are interviewed

Report on Coast Guard about to start when sound cuts out, followed thereafter by end of recording
