Bring your BIG ideas to NASA’s Breakthrough, Innovative, and Game-Changing (BIG) Idea Challenge! Each year, the BIG Idea Challenge offers a real-world experience for college students and their advisors to develop technology needed to support NASA’s exploration goals. It seeks novel ideas, applications, and prototypes relating to new themes announced each year. Participation is open to teams of undergraduate and graduate students at accredited U.S.-based colleges and universities officially affiliated with their state’s Space Grant Consortium. Teams of five to 25 students and faculty advisors submit proposals that are narrowed down to a field of five to ten teams annually. Finalist teams receive up to $180,000 (based on their proposed budgets) to design, build, and test their proposed concepts. Testing results are shared via a 15-to 25-page technical paper and presented to a panel of NASA and industry judges during the annual BIG Idea Forum. New themes are released every Summer (end of July/early August), and the program runs through the following November (~16 months). NASA’s BIG Idea Challenge is a collaboration between the agency’s Space Technology Mission Directorate’s Game Changing Development program, NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement’s Space Grant project, and the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, and is managed by the National Institute of Aerospace. It is a strategic initiative supporting NASA’s efforts to rapidly mature innovative/high-impact capabilities and technologies for infusion into a broad array of future missions.
