In 1964, the United States Army and United States Air Force adopted the M16 to replace the older wood and steel battle rifle. The M16 has a vast history; it first served with U.S. troops in Vietnam and saw action with other allied and NATO forces globally. Adversaries used the M16 as well, when captured. The XM16E1 was an experimental model adopted by the US Army. A little bit later, the M16A1 was introduced as an improved version of the XM16E1, and then the M16A2 was an improvement from that. The M4 and M4A1’s spawned from the M16 and had seen action during close quarters combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, around 60 years later, the U.S. has been looking to replace the M4 and M16A2. Note that while initial Army and Marine adoption of the M16 (and XM16E1) was not well received, Soldiers and Marines had little to no complaints about the later adoption of the M16A1 when the ammo quality, cleaning kit issue, and kinks were worked out.
For a span of around 60 years, the M16 and its variants have had a long history of serving with many nations to include the Canada, Malaysia, Israel, South Korea, South Vietnam, the U.S. and many many more
