Sukhothai was the capital of the first Kingdom of Siam (Thailand) in the 13th and 14th centuries. Here, at the Sukhothai Historical Park, you can visit 193 ruins, including 26 temples. In this video, we will visit five of the most important temples. The temples are mostly Buddhist temples and you will see many Buddhas, some as high as 30 feet tall. Wat Mahathat is the largest and most important temple complex, because it ws formerly the Royal Palace. You will see both Thai and Sri Lankan architectural influences, with bell-shaped chedis (pagodas) as well as a temple with 24 elephants. I visited Sukhothai Historical Park on a Tuesday and I pretty much had the entire park to myself. I truly appreciate the architecture and the history behind this ancient city.
