“Asahan po ninyo na ang pamahalaan ay gumagawa ng mga hakbang upang [maibsan] ang pinsala na naidulot ng mga insidenteng kagaya nito,” President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said in reassuring the fisherfolk and their families from the Province of Cavite when he led the distribution of Presidential assistance to communities affected by recent incidents of oil spill.
Cavite is among the provinces that suffered from three (3) succeeding cases of oil leakage from different vessels off the waters of Bataan last July, beginning with motor tanker (MTKR) Terranova, followed by MTKR Jason Bradley and motor vessel (MV) Mirola 1. According to reports, the situation has affected over 33,000 fisherfolk and caused PhP250 million worth of losses in their livelihood.
During the program, the President announced that the Department of Agriculture (DA) officially declares the lifting of fishing ban in oil spill-affected areas. “Pwede nang ituloy ang inyong hanapbuhay,” he said in his remarks.
“Hangad namin na ang Presidential Assistance na aming handog sa bawat apektadong mangingisda ay makakatulong sa inyong pagbangon at magbibigay ng panibagong pag-asa,” he continued as he turned over cash aid amounting to PhP5,000 to select beneficiaries from the Cities of Bacoor and Cavite, and the Municipalities of Kawit, Noveleta, Rosario, Tanza, Naic, Maragondon and Ternate, as well as a cheque amounting to PhP161.5 million to the Provincial Government of Cavite.
Different national government agencies (NGAs), including the Department of Agriculture (DA) – Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), and Department of Health (DOH) also prepared other forms of assistance in responding to the needs of affected residents.
The Chief Executive likewise pledged that government will pursue those who may be accountable to the law and ensured that affected individuals will be given compensation. He further shared recent developments to immediately address these incidents, saying that authorities have successfully closed off the spill from the three (3) vessels, particularly the MTKR Terranova.
“Patuloy naman ang ating pagkumpuni at pag-aayos ng manhole at air vents sa Jason Bradley na kabilang [sa] paghahanda para sa ating refloating operation... Isinasagawa na rin ang seawater siphoning, ‘yun na nga, sa barkong Mirola 1, kasabay ng pagtatakip sa mga butas ng katawan nito,” he added.
The President reiterated the Administration’s commitment to finding solutions for the problems caused by these incidents, underscoring its relentless effort to attend to the needs of the people and empower the fishing community in Cavite.
“Magiging kaagapay ninyo ang Administrasyong ito sa pagpapalawak ng inyong kaalaman at kasanayan sa pangingisda at sa paghihikayat pa sa kabataan na makilahok sa pagsulong ng inyong sektor... Sama-sama nating pagtatagumpayan ang mga hamon ng buhay at bigyan ng katuparan ang ating mga pangarap, sapagkat walang maiiwan at walang mahuhuli sa Bagong Pilipinas,” President Marcos Jr. ended in his speech.
