“On this day, the National Heroes Day, we commemorate and honor the courageous men and women who fought in battles to safeguard our land, freedom and dignity; the heroes who dedicated their lives for our nation and represent the unbroken lineage of Filipino heroism and the enduring spirit of our patriotism… Our country’s rich history produced a number of great heroes,” President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said as he led the nation in commemorating the 2024 National Heroes Day during a ceremony at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City.
In his speech, the President emphasized that the bravery and determination of the nation’s heroes paved the way for freedom that every Filipino enjoys today, noting that the sacrifices of these gallant men and women came at a great cost, resulting to the country's hard-won liberty.
“Let our commemoration today teach us the importance of not only remembering our heroes, but also of continuing to perpetuate their legacy of patriotism and [of] nobility,” he conveyed.
The Chief Executive also recognized the modern heroes – consisting of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), farmers, fisherfolk, healthcare workers, teachers, ordinary workers, navy, coast guard, soldiers, journalists, environmental advocates, Olympic athletes and Paralympians, to name a few – who have shown remarkable dedication, courage, discipline and heart in their respective professions, contributing immensely to the growth of the Philippine economy as they uplift their fellow Filipinos while serving their communities, protect the maritime borders and preserve the nation’s heritage for future generations.
“As we dedicate this day to honor our heroes of the past, let us not lose sight of what is asked of us for the present and for the future…Let us carry on the great legacy of our brave ancestors with the fortitude of an enlightened mind, the strength of compassion and generosity, and the courage of our convictions,” he continued.
Furthermore, the President urged all his countrymen to acknowledge the significance of history and pass it on to the Filipino youth, reiterating that it is only through patriotism that Filipinos can preserve its national identity.
"Let us pay homage to our past so that we can be worthy of the freedom that our ancestors fought for and of the Bagong Pilipinas that we can proudly leave to succeeding generations... With this vision ingrained in our endeavors, we can build a nation where the dreams of our heroes are realized in every home, in every community and in every single Filipino heart," President Marcos Jr. concluded in his speech.
