I manage over 20 local SEO locations for my client. This summer, they updated the primary category for all their locations, enabling reviews on their Google My Business profiles. Subsequently, their Share of Local Voice (SoLV) for a key non-branded keyword has dropped in rankings over recent months. Consequently, I conducted an A/B test across 12 locations to determine if a primary category change could enhance rankings.
The results were clear: altering the primary category significantly impacts rankings. On average, locations with a changed primary category experienced a +7% improvement in SoLV rankings, compared to a +2% increase for those that retained the original category.
