Torun is a city in northern Poland, located on the Vistula River, and part of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. Founded in 1233 by the Teutonic Knights, Torun has a population of about 200,000 people today. Its medieval Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated in 1997. The city is known for its well-preserved Gothic architecture, including the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist.
Torun is famously the birthplace of the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, who was born there in 1473. The city honors him with a statue in the Old Town Square, erected in 1853. Torun is also famous for its gingerbread, a tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages. The Leaning Tower of Torun, which leans at a 1.5-degree angle, is another unique feature of the city.
On this tour we enter the old town from the west and walk all the way through and around seeing many of these sights. Notably, Torun escaped major destruction during World War II, which allowed its historic architecture to remain largely intact.
