Termite Protists - Parabasalids & Devescovinids

This film presents living symbionts inhabiting the hindgut of a common Australian termite. A mix of highly specialised protists that have come into a remarkable mutual co-existence with termites. These mesmerising anaerobic flagellates belong to a group of protists called parabasalids. The large specimens throughout the film are from the genus Pseudotrichonympha (Grassi & Foà, 1911). Accompanying them are the much smaller devescovinids, found only in termite gut. And further still are the long spirochaete bacteria which, in some parabasalid genera, can attach and lock themselves to purpose made surface nodes and act as locomotion pushing some of the parabasalids around the gut. An example of this can be seen in the genus Mixotricha.
