Ozone is a strong oxidant that improves water quality and fish health in aquaculture systems but is toxic in high doses, particularly in brackish and seawater systems. Researchers at Nofima have determined the safe dose of ozone treatment in post-smolt salmon in brackish water, showing it to be an effective tool for ensuring biosecurity in Atlantic salmon aquaculture systems.
The research described is part of the DISINFECT project in CtrlAQUA SFI. The centre develops technological and biological innovations to make closed-containment aquaculture systems (CCS) a reliable and economically viable technology.
