Infectious diseases can spread more easily in busy areas such as on buses and in public buildings. Disease causing microorganisms can survive for hours or days on frequently touched surfaces. Antimicrobial coatings are of interest to help tackle this problem. The EU-funded Triple-A-COAT research project is developing new antimicrobial, antiviral and antifungal surface coatings based on nanocellulose, a natural, biodegradable material.
