The process of throwing one of my narrow footed, stepped bowls, forms that seem to have taken over the workshop lately, vessels made with many ledges and lines so that the glaze that will eventually coat it, can pool and break, interacting with the sharp clay-work to hopefully create something with more movement in its glassy surface.
Beneath the bowl is a thick wad of purposefully left clay, approximately two centimetres of stoneware where a tall foot-ring will later be trimmed and shaped. Sometimes, if the walls are really overhanging and the bowl feels somewhat precarious, I’ll blast the lower half of the spinning vessel with a paint-stripper, firming up the walls of clay and the foot in-particular, only then will I wire it through and lift it off the wheel.
Making these on throwing batts would be the more logical choice, but sometimes rational thoughts leave me and sometimes I simply like throwing on metal, as compared to wood.
I reduction fired this piece recently with a new olive-green glaze and if you scroll back in my feed, you’ll see it held aloft, a completely changed pot compared to what’s seen in this short video.
