Narrow cylinders like this are not only deceptively difficult to throw, but they can also be tricky to trim and finish. Not only that, how they’re dried after being thrown, and then after being trimmed, plays into how easy they are to finish.
Once, I threw a batch of these vases, set about 12 in a line, and then left them on a shelf for the rest of the day as I continued working. At six o’clock, when it came time to head home, upon checking these vases, I noticed that they had all lent over quite considerably to one side, as presumably the stoneware on one face of them, (the side that was hit by sunlight or a draft, or both), caused the clay to contract more on one side than the other, and well, a majority of them had to be reclaimed. Have you ever tried trimming a cylinder like this that’s bent towards the top? It’s tricky, although I did have some success rolling the vases out on a tabletop, like you might a rolling pin.
Nowadays, when I make these, I throw them all and then pretty much immediately sling plastic over them, or place the lot beneath a bucket. This way they can turn leather hard SLOWLY, without any drafts or inconsistencies, and this way, typically, they remain straight.
