Stargate, Dark Matter, and Today's TV Landscape (Dial the Gate)
THE TV LANDSCAPE has become a brave new world for science fiction and fantasy, as streamers compete with one another (and traditional broadcast and cable) for attention and try to outspend one another on their so-called "prestige" shows. That has led to a few great shows, a lot of not-very-good shows, and plenty in the middle that look great but can't seem to capture an audience.
And now the bubble has burst, and to save money streamers are making cuts while also raising prices and injecting ads. If all that is frustrating for you as a viewer, imagine how tough it is to navigate the changing landscape as a science fiction writer and producer.
Long-time Stargate writer and executive producer Joseph Mallozzi discusses all of it in this conversation with "Dial the Gate." Mallozzi joined STARGATE SG-1 in its fourth season and wrote for all three Stargate series before launching his own original series (with Paul Mullie), Syfy Channel's DARK MATTER (2015). Mallozzi talks about the industry's appetite for science fiction (and particularly known brands), the collapse of "peak TV" and the glut of spending by streamers, and his own efforts to revive DARK MATTER since it went off the air in 2017. He also shares what he thinks Amazon will need to do to bring back the Stargate magic ... and have viewers still recognize it as Stargate.
