ON A TELEVISION SHOW like Stargate there are many different kinds of “executive producers.” Some run the show and steer its creative direction in the writers room, while others might be studio execs that get a credit but are generally hands-off. Then there are veteran producers like Stargate’s N. John Smith, who was absolutely indispensable to the day-to-day production of the series – managing crew schedules, making sure the various departments are going to have their work done by the time the cameras roll, and getting episodes done on time and on budget.
“Dial the Gate” caught up with John for a rare conversation about his amazing career and his work on the Stargate franchise. Here he talks about the advantages of filming two shows at the same time across 11 sound stages, building a massive indoor set to control day and night lighting, and working directly with the show’s writers to accommodate production problems. He also talks about the hardest show he ever worked on in his career.
