TV SHOWS LIKE STARGATE SG-1 don’t work without the talents of the production crew – from production designers and makeup people to construction crew, lighters, and gaffers. But, once the script is in hand from the writers, the look and feel of the show starts with the production designers and artists.
In this conversation with “Dial the Gate,” Stargate SG-1’s art director Douglas McLean talks about finding his way onto the show and helping to create the show’s signature look. Before rising in the ranks McLean joined SG-1 as an assistant art director in the first season, as Stargate Command was under construction and new alien locations were being scouted. He also talks about adapting the settings and props from the 1994 feature film – including the massive Stargate itself – to work for an ongoing television series.
