How to see if a hard drive is failing.
Hi my name is Roger Ahuja and I'm going to take a moment and show you how to check to see if your hard drive is failing. One of the things you can obviously do is you can download a utility from the manufacturer of the hard drive to check to see if the drive is failing, but if you have a failing drive, when you run the utility there's a good chance it's going to kill the drive completely because it is a rigorous test. So you always want to have a backup before you run any kind of utility like that. I'm going to show you in Windows itself in event viewer how you can check to see if the drive is failing. So if you just go down here to search and type in event viewer. And we're going to view event logs. We're going to go to the Windows logs go to system and we just want to filter this log here. And we want to look for critical warning and errors and hit okay and once you got that, you want to look under source and you can sort it by source by clicking up here and we're just looking for anything that has a disk error. As you can see, I have something that is failing here. It was plugged into a USB port and so you've got DR5 here or hard disk 2 here. Usually your primary hard disk is going to be hard disk 0 or DR0 and sometimes you're going to see errors on external drives and they're going to have a higher number. 0 is your primary drive in your system and if you have more than 1 then 1 would be the next drive. So those are the one's to be concerned about. If you have errors that have a higher number. It could be caused by a USB memory stick that you've got that's failing or something like that and that's it.
