At least 41 people, including 38 students, were killed by armed assailants at a secondary school in western Uganda two kilometers from the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The attack occurred at approximately 11:30 pm on Friday, June 16, 2023, at Lubiriha Secondary School in Mpondwe. Authorities say the attack was carried out by five members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Uganda-based jihadist group that operates across the border in eastern DRC. According to Actu Cameroun, three of the victims were a guard and two members of the community (a female and a male). According to the BBC, 20 of them were attacked with machetes while the remaining 17 were burned to death. Eight people have been rescued and are in critical condition in the hospital. At least six people were taken hostage and used as porters to carry food stolen from the school’s store as the attackers crossed the Congolese border in the direction of Virunga National Park where terrorists frequently hide. The military and police are searching for the assailants and hostages with the use of planes and helicopters. According to AFP, Major General Dick Olum said the attackers, “knew where the boys’ and girls’ dormitories were. This is why they locked the boys’ dormitory and set it on fire. They did not lock the girls’ section and the girls managed to get out, but they were cut with machetes as they ran for safety, and others shot.” According to Reuters, Olum said an unidentified youth went to the school previously to learn its layout. As per AFP, eyewitness Mumbere Edgar Dido, aged 16, “said the attackers arrived at his dormitory carrying machetes and guns and opened fire from outside, sending everyone diving under their bed. ‘They continued to shoot through the windows, then set fire to [their] room while they were inside before going to the girls’ dormitory.’”
