Ethiopia earned $83 million from the export of electricity to its neighbors during the last 10 months. State-owned Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) supplied 12,126 gigawatt hours of electricity to Djibouti, Kenya, and Sudan, achieving 85% of its export goal. Ethiopia began exporting electricity to Kenya last November. According to the Ethiopian Monitor, Ethiopia’s electricity exports rose 26% from the same period during the previous year. EEP sold $257.4 million worth of electricity domestically during the 10-month period. As per the Ethiopian Monitor, Ethiopia would like to become a major electricity exporter to the East African region in the next 10 years and achieve $400 million in sales annually. The $4 billion 5,150-megawatt Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) started generating power in February 2022 but won’t be generating at full capacity until it is completely full in the coming years. Nonetheless, the GERD will play a major role in Ethiopia’s plan to integrate East Africa economically through electricity.
