Here's my first VGM arrangement of the year! I haven't played FFVIII, but I first heard this track - the Distant Worlds arrangement, specifically - when my friend Robby introduced me to it just over a year ago. I immediately knew I wanted to adapt it for solo marimba, but the process proved slightly trickier than anticipated. I initially wanted to do a chorale-style arrangement similar to my arrangement of "Dearly Beloved", from Kingdom Hearts, but the movement and nature of the lines in this one meant they weren't suited to constant rolls the same way. I did want to maintain some of the rolled sections, so I decided to do a pseudo-chorale, with several sections (like two "choruses") entirely rolled, with other sections played normally.
Despite the fact that this arrangement is quiet slow and not particularly complex-looking on paper, it was deceptively hard to record. I maintained the overall structure of the Distant Worlds arrangement, using a lot of the counterpoint lines, but editing other sections (like the final "chorus") to fit better on marimba, which is how I ended up recording parallel octaves with my arms spread across the instrument at 1:30 AM, haha.
I'm quite pleased with the way the audio and video for this one turned out; I think it may be among my cleanest work yet. I upgraded my reverb recently to Valhalla Room, and for the video, I messed around with subtle camera motion (zooms and panning) for the first time.
Thanks to Andy, Robby, and Ro, for providing mix feedback too!
