Jaak Yoala is a Soviet and Estonian pop singer. Honored Artist of the Estonian SSR (1980).
Jaak Joala was born in 1950 in the Estonian city of Viljandi into a musical family. His mother was a musicologist, she worked at the State Philharmonic of the Estonian SSR, it was she who enrolled her son in a music school, where Jaak attended two classes at once - flute and piano. By the end of school, Jaak became a virtuoso musician.
As a teenager, Jaak Yoala became interested in the work of the Beatles and decided to create his own rock and roll ensemble. Due to the refusal to stop performing rock music, he was forced to leave his studies at the Tallinn Music College.
He did military service in Tallinn in an army ensemble, during concerts he sang at various venues in the city.
After demobilization, Jaak founded the Lainer musical group, deciding to occupy a free niche in the field of rock and roll. In the second half of the 1960s, Joala was a bass player and soloist in various Estonian bands and ensembles, and his first radio recordings date back to this time.
In 1970, the singer won the republican competition of the Komsomol song, a year later - the competition of young pop singers. Estonians, especially young people, warmly treated his work: it was always difficult to get to concerts with Jaak's participation.
Yoala masterfully owned various musical instruments, sometimes he himself performed instrumental parts on recordings of his own songs - tracks of his performance on the piano, flute, guitar, and drums have been preserved.
After winning a special jury prize at the international song contest in Sopot in 1975, the British production center offered the young singer a lucrative contract. However, cooperation with a foreign company in those years was fraught with undesirable consequences. For the sake of a successful career in a foreign country, the performer had to abandon his homeland. Jaak, not ready for such a choice, refused a lucrative offer.
Soon the most famous Soviet composers became interested in the young performer. Yoala began to collaborate with David Tukhmanov, Raymond Pauls, Alexander Zatsepin. His speeches were often shown on Central Television.
Cinema also played a significant role in the artist's career. Jaak played the leading roles in two films - "The Doubles" and "Duet-Duel". In these tapes, he was not only an actor, but also a performer.
In 1979, the singer recorded several songs for the movie June 31st. After the release of the tape on the screens, Jaak Yoala became wildly popular in all corners of the Soviet Union. The participation of the performer in the "Song of the Year-80" was awarded a prestigious award.
Jaak Yoala recorded songs at all-Union studios, gave concerts throughout the vast country, starred in films, but did not forget about his native Estonia. In the Tallinn Drama Theater, he participated in the production of the musicals Summer Residents and West Side Story.
At the age of 31, Jaak Joala became an honored artist of Estonia.
In 1988, Jaak left the Soviet stage, and in the mid-1990s he practically stopped performing in concert. After leaving the stage, he taught guitar at the Tallinn Music College. He was engaged in producing young singers, taught vocals. As president of the Grameks public organization, he defended the copyrights of singers.
On February 3, 2010, the Office of the President of Estonia announced the decision to award the musician with the Order of the White Star IV class
