Matvey Blanter - Soviet composer, People's Artist of the USSR (1975), Hero of Socialist Labor (1983). Member of the Union of Composers of the USSR.
Matvey Blanter was born in 1903 in the family of a theater actress and a merchant. Even before the First World War, the family moved to Kursk, where Matvey studied at a real school, sang in the choir, and participated in the drama theater orchestra. In 1914, the Riga Musical College was evacuated to Kursk, where Matvey was sent to study piano.
In 1917, Blanter left for Moscow, where he studied violin, studied music theory and composition. On the advice of a teacher, Matvey Blanter began to create his own melodies, which later became the main business of his life.
The composer wrote his first works in the style of light dance music, but in the 1930s his style changed towards socialist realism.
World recognition to the composer brought "Katyusha". The author of the text of the song was Mikhail Isakovsky, who had only 8 lines in drafts at the time of their acquaintance. Blanter liked the sketches, he wrote music for them, after which, together with the poet, he finalized the composition. It was first performed in 1938, but gained nationwide popularity as a front-line song only during the Great Patriotic War.
Many creations of Matvey Blanter are devoted to the military theme. During the war he wrote about 50 songs. In 1945, the composer finished the song "Enemies burned their own hut." The composition sounded on the radio performed by Vladimir Nechaev, but was quickly removed from the rotation, as it was considered too painful for the population. The creation gained fame only 15 years later, performed by Mark Bernes.
After the war, the composer also continued to collaborate with variety theaters: for the theater of miniatures under the direction of Arkady Raikin, he wrote songs for the play "The Seasons", for the Moscow Music Hall - music for the performances "Moscow - Venus, then everywhere", "Tick-tock, tick-tock…”
Blanter's music has become a real treasure of Russian culture. It was performed by Leonid Utesov, Vladimir Nechaev, Vladimir Bunchikov, Sergey Lemeshev, Iosif Kobzon, Georgy Vinogradov, Lidia Ruslanova, Yuri Bogatikov, Mark Bernes, Bulat Okudzhava, Elena Obraztsova.
Matvey Blanter is the author of the anthem of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany.
Blanter is also the author of "Football March", which appeared in the same year as "Katyusha". Commentator Vadim Sinyavsky asked to write it, who wanted the duration of the work to be equal to that required by the teams to enter the field. As a result, the composer went to games with a stopwatch, and the idea of the melody itself appeared on the escalator in the subway.
Matvey Blanter is called the patriarch and even one of the founders of Soviet music. In total, the composer was the author of more than 200 songs, suites for voice and orchestra, operettas, music for performances, films, and radio shows.
