Just a couple of weeks before his momentous rewrite of the mile world record in Dublin,Elliott led in an Australian 1-2-3 at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games,held in Cardiff.England's Gordon Pirie who tried to go with the early pace paid the price and faded to 4th.
