Whenever the"greatest Olympian" tag gets thrown around,Nurmi will get my vote.At the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris he ran a remarkable seven times in six days and won the lot! This included the 1500 and 5000 metres finals within a couple of hours of each other and the 10K cross country run in a 45oC heatwave which caused over half the field to drop out.Five golds really should have been enough,but Nurmi was apparently angry the Finnish authorities wouldn't let him defend tie 10000m title he'd won in Antwerp four years earlier.Peeved,he went home and knocked half a minute off of the 10K WR ,adding it to the 1500,2000,3000 and 5000 metres(as well as the mile),world records he already held.Greatest? I reckon so .
