Somewhere in a “bugyal” - the local term for a Himalayan meadow, you will find a lean, turbaned man with a flaming red beard making deep, guttural noises, his eyes fixed on the grassy horizon. Although baffling to the uninitiated, his call is instantly recognizable to his cattle, and the wider Gujjar community. Firoz is part of an endlessly intriguing soundscape, from the rhythmic tapping of rotis (flatbread) between seasoned palms to the flickering crackle of the nomadic fires around which the shepherding community sings its undulating songs. But who is a Gujjar?
Between legends of lovestruck kings and ravishing milkmaids and nonchalant deference to a divine creator, there is one common thread running through the community - they are, by definition, nomads. Nomads who spend winter in the plains and summer in the hills, who nourish - rather than plunder - the green scapes that sustain them. Nomads who corral their livestock and move entire families every six months, relying solely on animal husbandry to sustain their unique culture as Muslim vegetarians. Nomads whose century-old symbiosis with nature is now colliding with forest protection laws and permits. Even as the forest nomads, the Van Gujjars, struggle to legitimize their migrating culture in the eyes of the state, their greatest inheritance - their language of coexistence - continues to thrive.
