Pahadi aurat kuch bhi kar sakti hai. The Pahadi woman can do anything. This is an emotion that resonates across the women of Almora, located on a ridge of the Kumaon hills in the Himalayas. The moniker Pahadi - literally “of the mountains” - personifies not just their geographical origins, but the strength of the mountain within them. It is a metaphor they often use to describe their unassailable endurance, the endless determination they harness to not just keep their home and hearth running in this punishing topography, but to spin boundless dreams from their humble looms.
The art of making tweed, once practised by their ancestors, was nearly lost to the vagaries of time. The women revived the Almora pattern and turned Almora Tweed into a thriving global enterprise. Yet, as they take their seats at the looms, these Pahadi heroines, fully aware of their achievement, don’t spin these yarns as grand entrepreneurs. With every handmade shawl, every inch of fabric they lovingly craft, they hope to shroud a stranger with their warm embrace.

Oh mountain, they sing, bend for me, will you, let me send a message across the valley. Let me send, woven with dreams, yarns of warmth to the world beyond.
