The best place to start recovering is with some re-education of your shoulder movement.
These aren't as easy as they look. I work with hundreds of people a month in our programs and doing this 4 moves through a full range of motion is something that very few people are able to accomplish without lots of compensation.
Cues to follow for all of these moves:
Reach the top of your head upward to the sky the entire time.
For the first 3 exercises, try to prevent your shoulders from shrugging upward. There is nothing wrong with this, but it will be a great challenge for your brain.
For the first 2 exercises, reach all the way through with your blade. Many people struggle to hit their end-range. Even if you round your spine a little bit, it can help you get in touch with your serratus anterior.
Watch yourself in a mirror or record yourself to see what you are doing. It is difficult to see your own back
If you feel pain with any motion, reduce the speed and range of motion. If you still feel pain, avoid that motion and only work the ones that feel good. Some discomfort is okay, but lasting pain (after you are done) is not.
People don't get excited about the basic stuff, but getting really good at the basics is what will make you great with the complicated and exciting movements.
Remember, everyone on our team has struggled with chronic pains. We have been pushed to the sidelines and forced to focus on the basics. As a result, we are now back to kicking ass and teaching others how to do the same.
