STIR pays tribute to Pritzker Prize laureate and AIA Gold Medalist Fumihiko Maki, and his legacy in pioneering the Metabolist movement in Japanese architecture.

“My philosophy hasn’t changed. I have always focused on decency as a basic ethical principle, giving consideration to all users,” said Maki, who passed away on June 6, 2024 at the age of 95. The architect was not only a pioneer in rebuilding Japan and redefining Japanese architecture post the second world war, his work was also particularly notable for a hybrid outlook, interweaving a minimalist Japanese aesthetic with Western culture and new technology, underscoring the results of the adoption of modernist principles in the non-West. Maki's designs, based on his concept of collective form, seamlessly facilitate multi-level human interactions within each of his works.
