CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center reached a significant milestone this week by successfully performing their 300th procedure with the "watchman" device.
The "watchman left atrial appendage" device is a one-time implant placed inside a small pouch in the patient’s heart, helping reduce the risk of stroke from blood clot formation.
Leading the procedure was Dr. Lou Mastrine, who says it's a highly effective and discreet piece of technology that's changed the game medically.
The device is used on over 300-thousand patients worldwide.
“Prior to the left atrial appendage inclusion devices, there were really no alternatives if someone is in a high bleeding risk. But now, again, seeing these devices like the watchman device is a safe alternative once it's inserted. Alternatively, they can get off their blood thinners.”
Conemaugh Memorial has been performing these procedures since 2019.
