COHO Salmon are one of the most exciting fish to catch with their aggressive nature in the ocean and rivers. They can grow to sizes over 20 pounds and are acrobatic fighters often leaving the water several times during a battle. When these fish enter rivers in the fall they often travel in groups. So the fishing can be fast action. The salmon are quite accepting of a piece of drifting roe through the water column. So if you present roe to Coho with a float they often will take a bite.

We catch COHO on Jigs, Spoons, Spinners, Float fishing Blades, Beads and Roe. I also have targeted them fly fishing and enjoyed excellent fishing in the frog water with slow to no current.

There are so many ways to target these fish, but for some reason I love watching a float drift down river and suddenly disappear below the surface of the water indicating a salmon taking your bait at the other end.

For some of us anglers this is a highly addictive drug as it probably releases a lot of dopamine for us. Keeps us coming back day after day to float different parts of the river, different rivers... searching for that next disappearing float.

This is sometimes a hard technique to learn as fish actually have to bite your presentation to have success. Which often times can get very frustrating if other people you're fishing with are trying to snag fish intentionally by the flossing method. Once this occurs and guys start ripping long leaders and weights though the run it generally turns off any biting that may have occurred.

Then some people see what some call success... fish on the beach. To me this is just snagging fish and nothing to be proud of. It's no accomplishment in my book. I'd rather go home empty handed over and over rather than trying to intentionally Foul hook fish, even if it is in the mouth.

So please take your time to learn the skill of searching for biting fish and be ready when they do. It is very exciting and rewarding to have fooled a fish into biting.

I hope you enjoy this video.

The first spot was mostly chum and the coho were likely scared by the chum and staying on the outside edge moving through. So after hooking several chum without many coho biting, I decided to move. So the coho action picks up later in the video.
