In this video, I show you how to find all Active Directory groups that have no members. These are groups that may no longer be in use and you wish to find and cleanup these unused groups.
To find Empty Security Groups.
1. Open the AD Pro Toolkit.
2. Click on AD Cleanup
3. Click on Filters and select "Groups Without Members". Uncheck Show Users and Show Computers.
4. Click Run.
This will give you a report of all groups that have no members. There are many built-in groups that have no members by default, you should ignore these (do not delete them).
Next, you can export the list to CSV, excel or PDF.
If you have files shares you can scan them to see if the empty groups are in use. In addition, you can run the all groups report and filter on the whenChanges column. This will show you groups that have not been modified recently.
I've worked with organizations that allow their IT Admins to create AD groups as needed. But they often forget to remove the groups or properly document what they are used for. Overtime the Active Directory domain becomes a mess with many unused groups that no one wants to delete (it might break something). The AD Pro Toolkit can help you find unused AD groups and scan your folder shares to check if any unused group is in use.
