It’s common to speak of historical Germany like it began in 1871 or is where German speaking people exist or ruled. Neither of these are adequate. So this episode is about what that term has meant through time. Also, this is part of Operation Deutschland, a collaboration dedicated to German history, so be sure to check that out. And what a perfect way to go on that journey as to know what that label contains. Yet this is contentious, because people like to impose national borders backwards, including ones as regularly fought over as these. Bounding Germany is deep at the core of so much conflict, from empires, nations, and soviets.
