David Wighton discusses the importance of fostering youth in the innovation space
David Wighton is the Managing Director of Social Innovation for ATB Financial. He's had a long career in the innovation and social space and, in this conversation with MindFuel CEO Cassy Weber, he touches on a variety of interesting things. He talks about how ATB is in business for the greater good of Albertans. And he discusses his views on innovation --what it is and why it matters.
Wighton tells us that "innovation" is less something that can be taught, than it is a variety of skills and mindsets that are to be fostered and encouraged. Things like collaboration, creativity, problem-solving, entrepreneurship, and design- and critical thinking all go into the development of an innovator. Wighton feels that "Canada is lagging behind" in the realm of innovation, and so, "these are important things to foster in youth." Wighton has some remarks about how Canada compares to some of the Nordic countries, in terms of innovation, noting that we fall short of where places like Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway are. This, he feels, owes to a "culture of collaboration" that has been deeply fostered in those places. Canada would do well to learn from this, he says, because there is a "direct correlation between innovation and social progress."
