A classic formula one racing game, Super Monaco GP was developed by Sega and launched to arcades in 1989. The game ran on Sega's X arcade board, with the original arcade version running at 60 frames per second.
The game depicted the classic Monaco Grand Prix, with players starting out in a preliminary race that would determine their starting position in the actual GP.
The game featured 3 modes of play, with players choosing between automatic and manual transmissions. The automatic transmission mode offered less power, while the manual transmission modes offered an exponential boost in power, but at the cost of having to constantly shift gears.
Unfortunately, the arcade version only included a single course, the Monaco GP; although, later versions released on consoles did include more maps to race.
There were several versions of the game released to arcades, partly because of a legal controversy between Sega and Philip Morris, and also because of differing cabinet types, some of which boasted state of the art innovative features for the time.
Sega incorporated innovative electro-mechanical features with the intent to add a sense of realism to the game; such as force feedback for the steering wheel, as well as Sega's "Air Drive" system, that mechanically moved portion's of a game cabinet, typically the seat. The system would also blow air into the cabinet as the vehicle accelerates.
While the arcade version only had a single course, there was a "Wet Conditions" mode that unlocked if players placed 3rd or better in the standard GP.
