Based on Konami's classic survival horror series, Silent Hill: The Arcade game was first released to arcades in Japan in 2007. Unfortunately, The game never saw a north American release; which is really kind of a shame given that the Silent Hill franchise has always been super popular with the North American market.

The game's story is a really dark, gloomy one, telling a tale of sadness and heartache, death and deceit.

The game starts off in the year 1918, with the depiction of a tragedy unfolding on a steamboat. Decades later in 1993, a group of college students who belong to an occult club, travel to the quiet town of Silent Hill to investigate a series of mysteries surrounding the town's Toluca Lake.

They seek to learn more about the lake's 1918 tragedy where a steamboat known as the Little Baroness, sank to the bottom of the lake with 14 passengers onboard. Legend has it the bodies still lie at the bottom of the lake with their hands reaching up.

After arriving in the town, one of the college students, Tina, meets with a young friend Emilie, who looks strikingly similar to the mysterious girl Hannah shown on the steamboat in the game's opening sequence.

After the group stays at a local lodge known as Jacks Inn, one of the students, Eric, is plagued by nightmares of the steamboat tragedy as he sleeps. When he awakens the following morning, he's shocked to see a heavy fog has completely enveloped the town, and his friends are nowhere to be found. He manages to find two of his friends, Tina, and his friend Bill who's been wounded by the mysterious monsters that have taken over the town.

As the story unravels, its revealed that one of the students, Eric, is actually the great grandson of the steamboat's captain, and he actually grew up in the town himself; giving him a much closer connection to the game's 1918 mystery.

As Eric and Tina search for clues to find their missing friends, they are teleported back in time to 1918, then back to the present again, over and over again, revealing new clues about the town's tragic history with each passing stage of the game.

While the beginning of the game starts out kind of slow, with Eric and Tina battling a few simple monsters through the streets of a densely fog ridden Silent Hill, the game quickly becomes a lot more suspenseful and immersive as it progresses.

The game featured branching path narratives, that would slightly change the sequence of events depending on the path you chose, in a very similar manner to Sega's House of The Dead series.

The game features notable bosses from the series, including the Split Worm and Pyramid Head among others.

Surprisingly, gaming critics largely panned this game upon release as being underwhelming. Which really confused us, as we honestly found the game's immersive story line and presentation of characters and events to be very compelling.
