Synthi100 and Piano Improvisation_A
Thanks to my good friends at the Greek Contemporary Music Research Center (KSYME) and kindly hosted by Athens Conservatory, I have been given the opportunity to work with an EMS Synthi 100, since June 2020. This legend of a synth, only 30 produced (1971 - 1979) and only a few specimens still functioning today, has 12 dual oscillators, three complex envelope shapers, 8 resonant filters, 2 adjustable noise sources, a filterbank, a complex random event and voltage generator, 8 VCAs, 8 input amplifiers, separate send and return busses, envelope and pitch follower, ring modulators, slew limiters, reverbs, as well as a three-layer 256 note event digital sequencer (with retrofitted MIDI interface). All these modules can be interconnected using two 60x60 matrixes and patch pins. This video is an excerpt from a free improvisation together with Vassilis Roupas (from RSLG Quartet) on piano, recorded 3 July 2020. I plan to make more content on the Synthi 100 while working with it, exploring, learning, and providing some maintenance. I want to showcase its amazing sound, explore the unique capabilities, describe its problems, and also unfold a great part of contemporary music history, in tutorial, performance, documentary, or vlog mode. Stay tuned!
Also, during the previous years, there have been residencies at KSYME, giving the opportunity to international artists to work on the Synthi 100 hosted at the Athens Conservatory. We are planning to continue this tradition, setting up a new international residency program - details are to be announced in Autumn.
