The Jurnee Smollett Black Canary Movie Can Do Birds of Prey Right
Black Canary's getting a movie on HBO Max! Many of us were surprised, but I don't think any of us were unhappy. Jurnee Smollett Black Canary was one of the best things about Birds of Prey, and the Black Canary's a great DC Comics character, so it's terrific that the superhero and the actress get to return.
I also think it's great that the DCEU Black Canary gets to emerge as her own spotlighted character. She and the Huntress were in Harley Quinn's shadow in the Birds of Prey movie, which was an injustice. They deserved better, and now it looks like one of them, Dinah Lance, is getting it.
Hopefully this can lead up to a crossover with the Leslie Grace Batgirl and perhaps another shot at doing the Birds of Prey again more like they are in the DC Comics stories someday.
