It is highly recommended that you safely remove USB flash drive and here is why. When your drive is in the USB post, your operating system (Windows, OS X, Linux) performs a series of writing and copying tasks according to your requests. However, it doesn’t perform them immediately, but rather puts then in a queue. And this is exactly why you need to safely remove USB by using your system’s available options – you need to let the system to finish this queue. Otherwise, your data might be lost.

It just takes a second to safely remove USB drive, but it’s a necessary action nonetheless. In Windows, you can see your drive’s icon on the taskbar. Just click it and then choose “Eject [Your USB Drive Name]”. That’s it. The USB drive is safely rejected and you can physically remove it from the USB port.
