Transmission media, also known as a communication channel, is
the physical path between the sender and receiver through which
data bits are transmitted from the source to the destination. In
simple words, when data is transferred from one device to another,
it is transmitted through Transmission Media to destination. To
transfer data from one device to another, primarily either Guided
media or Unguided media is used.
Difference between Guided and Unguided Media:-
1. The guided media is also called
wired communication or bounded
transmission media. The unguided media is also called
wireless communication or
unbounded transmission media.
2. Guided media uses a physical
conductor such as a wire, fiber-optic
cable, or coaxial cable to transmit data. While Unguided media uses air as a
medium to transmit data.
3. It provides direction to signal for
travelling. Therefore, it is called
guided media. While Unguided media does not provide any direction.
Therefore, it is called unguided media.
4. In guided media, the signal
transmission speed is quite fast. While in Unguided media transmission speed is
slower compared to guided media.
5. Signals are in the form of voltage,
current, or photons in the guided
media.Signals are in the form of
electromagnetic waves in unguided
media.
6. Examples of guided media are
twisted pair wires, coaxial cables,
and optical fiber cables. Examples of unguided media are
radio waves, microwave, and infrared
light.
7. In guided media, signal attenuation
is reduced because the signal is
contained within the signal conductor. In unguided media, signal attenuation
is higher because the signal is not confined
within a physical medium, making it
susceptible to interference from external
factors.
8. Due to the need for physical
infrastructure and equipment, the
establishment and maintenance
of guided media can be more
complex and expensive. The establishment and maintenance
of unguided media can be simple and
cost-effective because there is no need
for physical infrastructure and
equipment.
9. Guided media is more secure. Because
the physical conductor provides a barrier
against unauthorised access or interception. Unguided media can be less secure
compared to guided media because
signals can be intercepted.
10. For a shorter distance, guided media is the
best option. For longer distances, unguided media method
is used.
11. By adding more wires, the
transmission capacity can be
increased in guided media. It is not possible to obtain
additional capacity in unguided
media.
