In this video, the Ring Oscillator and the applications of the Ring Oscillators are explained in detail.
What is a Ring Oscillator?
The Ring Oscillator consists of an odd number of Inverters (NOT gates) in the chain and there is a feedback from the output to the input side (The output of the last inverter is connected as an input to the first inverter).
Because of the finite propagation delay of the inverter, this configuration generates the square wave of the specific frequency.
The frequency of the Ring oscillator can be given as
f = 1 / (2*N*tp)
Where,
N = No. of Inverters
tp = Propagation Delay of the Inverter
Applications of Ring Oscillator:
1) Voltage Controlled Oscillator
2) Random Number Generation
3) Measuring Voltage or temperature in the IC
4) For benchmarking new hardware technology
5) For Wafer Testing (to identify the manufacturing deviations during the wafer fabrication)
