What’s the difference between LDL and HDL? – LDL vs HDL | Bad Cholesterol vs Good Cholesterol
LDL (low-density lipoprotein) and HDL (high-density lipoprotein) are two types of lipoproteins responsible for transporting cholesterol in the bloodstream. LDL is often referred to as "bad" cholesterol because it can build up in the walls of arteries, leading to plaque formation and increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. On the other hand, HDL is known as "good" cholesterol because it helps remove LDL cholesterol from the arteries and transports it to the liver for excretion, thus reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Essentially, while LDL contributes to the accumulation of cholesterol in the arteries, HDL works to remove it, making it essential to maintain a balance between the two for optimal heart health.
