Jones Criteria for Rheumatic Fever | Jones Criteria for Rheumatic Fever Mnemonic | Major & Minor Jones Criteria for Rheumatic Fever
The Jones Criteria are guidelines for diagnosing rheumatic fever, a complication from Streptococcus pyogenes infection. The mnemonic "JONES PEACE" helps remember the criteria, divided into major (JONES) and minor (PEACE) categories. The major criteria are: Joints involvement (migratory polyarthritis), Carditis (heart inflammation), Nodules (subcutaneous), Erythema marginatum (distinctive rash), and Sydenham's chorea (rapid, uncoordinated movements). The minor criteria are: Previous rheumatic fever or preceding streptococcal infection, ECG with PR prolongation, Arthralgia (joint pain without arthritis), increased acute phase reactants (CRP and ESR), and Elevated temperature (fever). For a definitive diagnosis, either two major or one major and two minor criteria, plus evidence of a preceding streptococcal infection, are required. This can be confirmed through positive throat culture, rapid antigen test, or elevated streptococcal antibody titers.
